Final Fantasy IX is one of my all-time favorite games, and one of my favorite in the series. I think square did a splendid job trying to bring the series back to its roots. Not that FF7 and FF8 were taking the wrong direction, not by a long shot.
So about the piece, Zac Gorman over at Magical Game Time announced that he was putting together a FF9 online zine and called for entries. So right away I started watching a complete play through of the game looking for inspiration, and this is what came out. So in time well see if this piece gets into that zine, and even if it doesn't, I'm still really happy with the result. I had this idea in my mind that I could somehow paint with water colors and a had a water coloring set at home so I gave it and gave water colors s go. I was surprised about how well the piece came out. But then again, I think watercolors have a lot of potential for more radical coloring than staying neatly in the lines. Still pretty good for a first go.
As always scans of water colors are never as good as they are IRL, so I might try to fiddle with it and see if I can make it better.
Thank you so much! Suffice to say that I did listen to Roses of May almost compulsively while I was making this. FF9 is definitely on my top 3 Fantasies of the Final variety.
Water color is the only reason I actually did it, as I was drawing I was really looking forward to painting Alexandria without guides. Admittedly It may not be my best architectural work, but it was tons of fun to do. With Beatrix I learned how much fun watercoloring anime hair can be!
She is, its surprising the amount of character development they managed to fit into into the very few scenes that she was in. If only there was more we could look into, like how she lost her eye.
